A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis, the first of its kind on this specific question, looked at what happens when people regularly cold plunge right after resistance training. The finding: cold water immersion likely produces at least a small reduction in muscle growth compared with doing the same training without the cold afterward. It does not wipe out your gains. But if maximum muscle size is the goal, plunging in the window right after lifting appears to work slightly against you.
Resistance training creates a burst of muscle building signals in the hours after your session. Cold appears to dampen part of that response, likely through reduced blood flow, suppressed anabolic signaling, and blunted inflammation. Some inflammation after training is not the enemy: it appears to contribute to the signalling processes involved in muscle adaptation. Cold the moment you finish can mute that message.
